This is perhaps the penultimate squadron history ever written. The author has done his research well and backs up the story with 430+ rare photographs, documents and letters from the journals and scrapbooks of the pilots and groundcrew. And if that weren't enough the book has a section of color renderings that show many of the color schemes used on the SE5 and SE5a aircraft. Below are a few samples selected from the pages of "High in the Empty Blue". They are larger than shown on the screen. For a complete list of the color renderings in this exciting volume click here!

SE5a B'514 flown by Richard Leighton when shot down and taken POW on August 17, 1917.
SE5a C'1149 'Schweinhund' flown by Capt. Duncan Grinnell-Milne painted red after hostilities ended.

This comfortable pose, (notice the house slippers!) against the nose of an SE5 at Bekesbourne, typifies the relaxed attitude to both life and the war of Capt.'Billy' Crowe, the B Flight Commander.Crowe left the Squadron around the time of this photograph. He was posted to Home Establishment. Later, chafing to get back into the action, even offering to be demoted in rank, Major Crowe returned to 56 Squadron. He was a very popular leader.
